Temple of the Dragonslayer Tim Waggoner Art by Vinod Rams A young girl, asleep on a trail in the forest, is awakened by the threatening sounds of three goblins. The girl’s only memory is her name, Nearra. Nearra avoids being harmed by the three beasts when she runs for her life and reaches a clearing in the forest. A talking green dragon, named Slean, is Nearra’s next nemesis. Maddoc, a master wizard, and Davyn, a young ranger, come to Nearra’s rescue. Maddoc hires Davyn to accompany Nearra on her journey to a phony healer who is unable to restore Nearra’s memory. Nearra feels hopeless until she learns about healing clerics at the Temple of the Holy Orders of the Stars. Along the way, Nearra meets several fascinating characters including a kender wizard, a minotaur, a female warrior, an elf thief and a copper dragon. All but one of Nearra’s travel companions have good intentions and vow to protect her. Volume one in the series “The New Adventures” showcases such positive personal characteristics as selflessness, loyalty, hope, honor and perseverance. A fun fantasy that is too busy and heavy on details at times. BIBLIO: 2004, Mirrorstone Books/Wizards of the Coast Inc, Ages 8 up, $5.99. MJ, willl the "heavy on the detail" impact a young reader? Or will it appeal to readers who love detail? | |
