The Highwayman’s Footsteps Nicola Morgan This is a story about Will and Bess—two radically different eighteenth century teenagers. Highborn Will is on the run from both his family and British soldiers, and Bess is the orphan daughter of a famous highwayman who follows in her father’s footsteps. The teens’ paths cross when Bess robs Will at gunpoint. During the robbery, Bess collapses from a previous gunshot wound, and Will risks his life to save hers. After Bess recovers, she and Will travel to her cottage where they discover a young deserter named Henry. When the redcoats are tipped off about Henry’s whereabouts, they harass Will and Bess until Henry’s surrender and simultaneous execution. After his murder, Will and Bess fulfill Henry’s wish to help his poor family. Morgan’s inspiration for writing this well-written, fast-paced historical adventure came from her favorite Alfred Noyes poem “The Highwayman.” A reprint of this famous poem is included after the story. This story is narrated by Will. The central characters—Will and Bess—are very well developed. Will’s, Bess’s, and Henry’s immoral behavior will seem inexcusable until their backgrounds are revealed. Those who purchase this title will not experience buyer’s remorse. BIBLIO: 2007, Candlewick Press, Ages 12 up, $16.99. REVIEWER: Mary Jo Edwards FORMAT: Young Adult ISBN: 978-0-7636-3472-8
